Use your own domain

Every board starts on its own JobClay address, such as yourname.jobclay.app. On a paid plan you can move it to a domain you own, such as jobs.example.com or example.com. The Free plan keeps the JobClay address, and the pricing page shows what each plan includes.

Only the board's owner can change domains. Other admins see the Domains page but cannot change it.

Connect your domain

To connect your domain:

  1. In the console, open Domains.
  2. Under Connect your own domain, type the domain, such as jobs.example.com.
  3. Below it, the box that starts "Also connect www." is ticked, to connect the www address too, such as www.example.com beside example.com. Untick it if you do not want the www address.
  4. Press Add domain. The domain appears under Addresses as "Waiting for DNS records", with the records to add.
  5. Add those records where your domain's DNS is managed (next section).
  6. Back on Domains, press Check now.
  7. When the domain shows "Connected" and a Make primary button, press it.

From then on the domain is your board's main address. The JobClay address, the www address and any other connected domain redirect to it, so each page has one address. The change can take a couple of minutes to reach every visitor.

The DNS records to add

The Domains page lists the records for each domain you add, in a table of Type, Name and Value, with a Copy button beside each value. Copy them from the page: they are made for your board.

  • A TXT record proves you own the domain. Its name is _jobclay-verify. followed by your domain, such as _jobclay-verify.example.com, and its value starts with jobclay-verify=. A www address uses the record of the domain without www, so one TXT record covers both.
  • A routing record sends visitors to JobClay. A subdomain, such as jobs.example.com or www.example.com, takes a CNAME that points to your board's JobClay address. A root domain, such as example.com, cannot take a CNAME, so it takes the A records the page lists (and AAAA records, when it lists them), which hold JobClay's server addresses.

As the page says, use DNS only, not Cloudflare's proxy, for these records.

How long it takes

  • Checks. Check now asks DNS at once. JobClay also checks a waiting domain by itself every 10 minutes, for 7 days. A domain still waiting after 7 days is removed: add it again once its records are in place.
  • Your DNS provider. A check finds your records only once DNS answers with them, and how soon that happens depends on your provider.
  • Make primary. The button appears once the domain is verified and its routing record reaches JobClay.
  • The certificate. You do nothing for HTTPS. Once your domain is verified and points to JobClay, its certificate is issued the first time someone opens it.

When it does not work

After a check, the page says under the domain what is still missing:

  • "The TXT record ... is missing or does not hold the value below." Check the TXT record's name and value against the page. Some DNS providers add the domain they manage (the zone) to every name you type, which turns _jobclay-verify.example.com into _jobclay-verify.example.com.example.com. With such a provider, type only the part of each name before the zone. In the zone example.com, that is _jobclay-verify for the domain example.com; for the subdomain jobs.example.com it is _jobclay-verify.jobs for the TXT record and jobs for the CNAME.
  • "... does not point to JobClay yet." Check the CNAME or the A and AAAA records against the page, and remove any older record for the same name that points somewhere else. If your DNS is on Cloudflare, set these records to DNS only.
  • "DNS could not be reached for the last check. Nothing has changed." The check failed on JobClay's side, not yours. Press Check now again later.
  • "That domain is already connected to a board." The domain is already on a board, this one or another, so it cannot be added again.
  • "Your plan does not include your own domain." Choose a paid plan under Billing (the page links to it), then add the domain.

If your domain stops working later

JobClay keeps checking connected domains. A connected domain whose TXT record goes missing shows "Records missing". If your primary domain loses its records or stops pointing to JobClay ("Not reaching JobClay"), the owner gets an email, and the page says "Fix the records by" a date "or this address stops being primary". You have 7 days. After that the board moves back to its JobClay address, and once the records are fixed the owner makes the domain primary again.

If the board moves to a plan without your own domain, your own primary address keeps working for 30 days, and the page says "Your own address works until" that date. Change plan before then to keep it; after it, the board moves back to its JobClay address.

To stop using a domain, make another address primary, then press Remove beside it and Yes, remove. The primary address and the JobClay address cannot be removed.

Send email from your own domain

Some plans also include your own sending domain, so the board's email comes from noreply@ at your domain instead of JobClay's mail domain. The pricing page shows which plans. On Domains, under Sending domain:

  1. Type your domain under Send from your own domain, such as example.com, and press Set up sending domain.
  2. Add the CNAME records the page lists at your DNS provider, with DNS only.
  3. Press Check now. Once the status reads "Verified: mail now comes from" your address, the board's email uses it.

Until then, mail keeps coming from the address the page names. A domain that is not verified within 72 hours says so: check the records, then remove it and add it again.
